However, the first quilt i made, i did a combination.
I quilted straight lines in the bear claws and stars in the border, with stippling everywhere else.
I used a walking foot for the straight lines in the bear claws and around each block and free motioned the stars in the border.
It depends on what type of geometric straight line quilting you are wanting to do.
Do you want to do straight lines that go the entire length of the quilt, such as?
If so, that is easy to do on a home machine.
If you mark your lines you can still use the puddling method shown in the tutorial linked earlier and it will work just fine.
When you use a walking foot to quilt straight line designs, you can only go in one direction; straight forward.
So if you need to turn a corner, you have to turn the whole quilt.
You can avoid some of this by carefully planning your quilting and doing all the parts that point one direction, then turning the quilt and doing all the parts that point another direction.
This would save a lot of strain and time.
You can still do this type of quilting with a free motion setup and that works too.
However, it takes a lot more practice in my opinion to be able to sew a good straight line, especially at a backwards diagonal, while freemotion quilting.
All of this goes to say that you can quilt and do whatever you want to on a home machine, just that some types of quilting are easier than others.
If you are planning on staying with quilting and want to buy a new machine, than look for one that has a deep throat for quilting.
It will make your life easier.
With regards to the puddling the quilt rather than rolling it into a log.
When you roll it into a log, the quilt gets really stiff and harder to move.
These are just my thoughts after quilting a twin, a full, a king, and a lap quilt on my nonquilting machine.
